Cross-border militancy module busted, 5 militant associates arrested in Kupwara: Police

Kupwara: A cross-border militancy module involved in smuggling of arms and ammunition was busted and five militant associates were arrested in Karnah Kupwara, police said in a statement said on Saturday.

“Acting on credible information from own sources and corroborated by other sister agencies and counterparts Kupwara police along with 09 PARA Field Regiment has busted a militancy module involved in smuggling of various arms and ammunition sent by two Pakistan-administered Kashmir based LeT militant handlers Manzoor Ahmad Sheikh alias Shakoor, son of Wali Mohammad Seikh, a resident of Gabra Karnah and Qazi Mohammad Khushal, son of Qazi Syed Yaseen, a resident of Dhanni Karnah, both at present operating from across the border,”police said.

By arresting one Zahoor Ahmad Bhat, son of Noor Hussain Bhat, a resident of Rear Sudhpora Karnah, various incriminating materials like AK rifle, magazine, 20 AK rounds, 2 pistols and two magazines, the statement said.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that in the recent past the above two handlers from across were in touch with the said Zahoor who hails from a village which is in proximity with LoC with various means.”

“The consignments dispatched to this side from across were thereafter delivered to other militant associates who were in contact with Zahoor Ahmad Bhat and the said handlers as well”, reads the statement.

“Based on the further leads, four more militant associates Khursheed Ahmad Rather, son of late Mohd Yousuf Rather of Gabra, Karnah; Mudassir Shafiq, son of Shafiq Ahmad of Gabra, Karnah; Ghulam Sarwar Rather, son of  Mohd Yousuf Rather of Gabra Karnah and Qazi Fazal Illahi, son of Qazi Mohammad Anwar have also been arrested, arms and ammunition and other incriminating material recovered from them including: five AK rifles (short), five magazines and 16 rounds, reads the statement.

“The case is being investigated expeditiously in a comprehensive manner to further unearth the conspiracy regarding the smuggling of arms and ammunition and proscribed material/contraband”, reads the statement further.
