Former sarpanch ‘abducted’ in Kathua, rescued; seven arrested

Kathua: Seven men were arrested on Friday for allegedly kidnapping a former Sarpanch a village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, PTI reported quoting police officials.

The victim, former Sarpanch Varinder Singh, also known as Bantu, was rescued by the police in an injured condition and subsequently admitted to the Government Medical College hospital.

The incident was brought to light through a complaint filed by Ram Saran Sharma of Marheen village in Kathua.

According to the complaint, Varinder Singh alias Bantu was abducted at the behest of Kamaldeep Singh, also known as Rinku, who is identified as his sworn enemy by the police.

The abduction took place when Varinder Singh was forcibly taken at gunpoint by six men in a Mahindra Scorpio car from Kathua’s Chann Rorian village, as per the police statement.

The seven men arrested in connection with the case were identified as Kamaldeep Singh, Gurmeet Singh, Rajbir Singh, Yogeshwar Singh, Vikram Singh, Daljeet Singh, and Vinod Sharma.

Additionally, a pistol found in their possession was seized by the police. The arrests were made following the complaint and subsequent rescue operation.
