Mumbai: Acclaimed playback singer and ghazal maestro Pankaj Udhas passed away after a prolonged illness in Mumbai on Monday.
The 72-year-old singer, who had a notable career as a playback artist in Bollywood films such as “Naam,” “Saajan,” and “Mohra,” breathed his last at around 11am.
Born on May 17, 1951, in Jetpur, Gujarat, Pankaj Udhas began his career with the launch of the ghazal album titled “Aahat” in 1980. Swiftly, he became synonymous with ghazal music in India.
In a statement, the singer’s family said, “With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhar on February 26, 2024, due to a prolonged illness.”
Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for Ghazal master Pankaj Udhas’s demise on February 26.
Sharing the news of Pankaj Udhas’ death on his Instagram, singer Sonu Nigam wrote, “One of the most important part of my childhood, is lost today. Shri Pankaj Udhas ji, I will miss you forever. My heart cries knowing that you are no more. Thank you for being there. Om Shanti.”
Over the years, Pankaj released numerous albums and graced the stage with many live concerts. Recognizing his contributions, Pankaj Udhas was bestowed with India’s fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri.
