Fake journalist arrested for extortion attempt in Pulwama, says police

Rahmoo: A fake journalist was arrested in Rahmoo village of Pulwama on Tuesday, alongside his accomplice, for attempting to extort money from a local house owner.

The man identified as Abass Ahmad Seh, along with Sheraz Ahamed Dar, were held on charges of posing as journalists and attempting to extort money.

Hailing from Nagbal, Shopian, both men were allegedly demanding money from Mohd Shafi Rather, the owner of a house in Rahmoo. Their demands were linked to not revealing certain activities, including construction on Khacharie.

Police officials from Rajpora police station also seized a fake identity card and mobile phones from the accused.

The duo face charges under FIR no 19/2024, falling under sections 419 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.

The fraud came to light when a journalist Qayoom Khan, a Correspondent with CNN News 18, confronted the fake journalists during their attempt to extort money from the vulnerable house owner.

The police, upon arriving at the scene, commended Khan’s efforts, leading to the detention of the fraudsters.

Local residents, along with the house owner, expressed their appreciation for Khan’s intervention in exposing the fake journalists and aiding in their arrest.
