New Delhi: Court has given Delhi Police 10 more days to finish gathering evidence against Prabir Purkayastha, founder of NewsClick, and its HR head, Amit Chakravarty.

They’re accused of taking money to support China through their media outlet.

The police had asked for more time, despite earlier extensions.

The court also extended Purkayastha and Chakravarty’s time in custody. Last year, the police asked for the maximum time allowed by law, 180 days, to collect evidence.

They said they needed to go to different places outside Delhi. Chakravarty asked to help the police and was allowed to do so.

Purkayastha challenged the case in the Delhi High Court, which asked the police to respond. The court also rejected Purkayastha and Chakravarty’s appeals against their arrest.

The Delhi Police’s Special Cell filed a case against NewsClick in August 2023, accusing them of breaking laws related to national security and the Indian Penal Code.

A New York Times report claimed NewsClick got money from a group linked to a US millionaire to support China.
