Bareilly: A journalist covering Home Minister of India Amit Shah’s rally in Rae Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh during the Lok Sabha elections was reportedly assaulted by members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as he was mistook as Muslim due to his beard and Kurta Pyjama.

The incident occurred on May 12 when Raghav Trivedi, a journalist from Molitics, was covering the rally and interviewed some women attendees, various news organisations reported.

Mistaken for a Muslim due to his appearance, Trivedi was approached by BJP members who demanded he turn off his camera. When he refused, he was physically assaulted. Despite the presence of police and other journalists, no one intervened. Trivedi mentioned feeling targeted because of his beard and attire, Congress said as they uploaded the video of him getting examined by doctors at hospital.

The Congress Party condemned the incident, stating that BJP supporters attacked the journalist for recording women admitting they were paid to attend the rally.
