Imam lynched by mob in Jharkhand

The victim Maulana Sahabuddin.

Jharkhand: Maulana Sahabuddin, an Imam from Raghuniyadih, Jharkhand, was lynched by a mob in Koderma district while returning home on his bike.

The mob accused him of hitting a woman on the road and beat him to death, reported The Observer Post.

According to Sahabuddin’s son, Mohammad Parvez Alam, his father worked as an Imam and taught children in Barkada District, Hazaribagh. On June 30, 2024, Sahabuddin left Basrao at around 8 am to return home to Bunichowdia on his two-wheeler.

Near Ghuthari Kariya, an auto allegedly caused an accident, injuring Anita Devi from Khuthari Kar.

Anita Devi’s husband, Mahendra Chadav, and her brother-in-law, Ramdev Yadav, along with locals, gathered at the scene. Despite Anita Devi reportedly asking the mob not to beat Sahabuddin, they continued to assault him with batons and sticks.

“He was bleeding from his nose, likely due to internal injuries. We want a thorough investigation,” Alam said.

Suraj Das, a local leader with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), stated, “The woman requested the mob not to beat Maulana, but they continued. The mob likely targeted him because he was a Muslim.”

Das added, “He didn’t die in the accident; the mob hit him on the head.”

Police denied allegations of mob violence, stating they arrived after the accident and transported Sahabuddin to the hospital, where he later died. His body was sent for a postmortem, the police told The Observer Post.
