Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Congress voiced concerns on Monday about the situation in the Jammu region following the Kathua militant attack. They urged the government to initiate a “full-scale war against militancy” to protect both armed forces personnel and civilians.

In the attack, five army personnel, including a junior commissioned officer, were killed, and several others injured when heavily armed militants ambushed a patrolling party in the remote Machedi area of Kathua district.

This attack marks the fifth incident in the Jammu region within a month, sparking widespread condemnation. Political leaders expressed alarm over the resurgence of militancy in an area where it had been eradicated over two decades ago.

The Congress’ Jammu and Kashmir unit called the Kathua attack shocking and intolerable. Vikar Rasool Wani, chief of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, emphasised the need for decisive government action.

He stated, “The government must launch a full-scale war against militancy to safeguard the lives of our armed forces, security personnel, police, and civilians.” Bharat Sinh Solanki, the Congress’ in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir affairs, condemned the attack and prayed for peace for the victims.

Ravinder Sharma, the party’s spokesperson in Jammu and Kashmir, stressed the urgency for strong government action against militancy in the region.
