Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated on Monday that while Iran does not seek to escalate war in the region, it will respond to Israel’s actions, particularly the assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh. Haniyeh was killed in Tehran on July 31 after attending Pezeshkian’s swearing-in ceremony.

Both Hamas and Iran have blamed Israel for the assassination, though Tel Aviv has not confirmed or denied its involvement.

Pezeshkian made these remarks during a meeting in Tehran with Sergei Shoygu, the secretary of Russia’s Security Council, as reported by the Iranian state news agency IRNA. Pezeshkian accused Israel of attempting to ignite regional conflict through its actions against Palestinians and assured that Iran would respond to these crimes.

Shoygu also met with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Ahmadian to discuss their countries’ relations. Iran and Russia, close allies, have strengthened their bilateral ties in recent years amid increasing tensions with the US.
