New Delhi: Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi emphasised the importance of swift justice in cases involving crimes against women, stating that it would provide them with greater assurance of their safety.

Modi also highlighted the judiciary’s role as the guardian of the Constitution, praising the Supreme Court and the judiciary for upholding this responsibility, PTI reported.

Speaking at the inaugural session of a national conference of the district judiciary, attended by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, Modi noted that the people of India have always trusted the Supreme Court and the judiciary.

Referring to the emergency as a “dark” period, the prime minister commended the judiciary for its crucial role in upholding fundamental rights during that time. He also acknowledged the judiciary’s efforts in safeguarding national security by prioritising national interests.

Amid recent incidents, such as the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata and the sexual assault of two kindergarten girls in Thane, Modi expressed deep concern over atrocities against women and the safety of children. He stressed that faster justice in such cases would enhance the sense of security for women.

Modi further noted that while there are stringent laws to address crimes against women, there is a need for better coordination within the criminal justice system to ensure timely justice.
