New Delhi: India has announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent high-level visit to Kyiv will strengthen bilateral relations and encourage more forward-looking discussions on peacefully resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

During his weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responded to a query by stating, “As friends and partners, we will support any feasible and mutually acceptable solution or format that could restore peace.”

When asked about Indians detained in the Russian army, Jaiswal confirmed that “15 Indians who have been released have returned to India, while others are still awaiting discharge.” He added that the Indian embassy is in touch with Russian authorities and hopes those wishing to return to India will be released soon.

Addressing multiple questions about Modi’s visit to Ukraine and the statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Jaiswal noted that Ukraine has its own perspective on various issues, which they have shared with the media.

However, India will be guided by the bilateral discussions held during the recent high-level visit, which are expected to strengthen ties and facilitate forward-looking discussions on a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Jaiswal emphasised that India has consistently advocated for constructive, solution-oriented, and practical engagement with all stakeholders to achieve a negotiated settlement. He highlighted India’s outreach to both Russia and Ukraine at the highest level, with the PM expressing India’s willingness to play a constructive role in achieving peace. However, he added that it is too early to comment on specific modalities and pathways.

The decision on when and how to start peace talks remains the prerogative of the two parties involved in the conflict.

“As friends and partners, we will support any feasible and mutually acceptable solution or format that could restore peace,” Jaiswal reiterated.

Regarding reports of Indians stranded at Sao Paulo airport in Brazil, Jaiswal confirmed that the Indian consulate in Sao Paulo is in contact with local authorities, and contrary to some media reports, the stranded Indians are being provided with food.

On India-Germany bilateral ties, Jaiswal mentioned that the recently signed mobility partnership will enhance people-to-people connections. When asked about the India-Africa Summit, he said discussions with the African Union are ongoing to schedule the event.
