Israel launches fresh airstrikes in Beirut after ordering residents to evacuate

Airstrikes on southern Beirut continues by Israel on October 2, 2024.

Israel conducted fresh airstrikes early Wednesday in a southern suburb of Beirut after ordering residents to evacuate, international media reported.

Fighter jets targeted several areas, including Haret Hreik, Chyah, Choueifat, Er-Rouaiss, and Jamous, as reported by Anadolu. Smoke was seen rising from the impacted sites, but no details on casualties or damage have been provided.

The strikes followed warnings from the Israeli army, which urged civilians to evacuate buildings in southern Beirut, with maps provided by army spokesperson Avichay Adraee. The airstrikes came shortly after Iran launched 180 ballistic missiles at Israel, responding to the assassinations of key figures: Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, and IRGC commander Abbas Nilforoshan.

Since September 23, Israel has intensified airstrikes on Hezbollah targets across Lebanon, resulting in over 1,073 deaths and 2,950 injuries, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. Israel also began ground operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, as tensions between the two sides continue to escalate in the context of Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. International warnings have been issued over the potential for this conflict to spread regionally.
