US joins Israel in missile defence after Iranian airstrikes

US President Joe Biden with Israeli PM Bejamin Netanyahu.

A day after Iran launched missiles at Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut and Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, US President Joe Biden ordered the US military to support Israel’s defence efforts.

Although Israel has advanced missile defence systems, the US military stepped in to help neutralise the incoming projectiles

During a White House briefing, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan praised both the Israeli and US military for their coordinated response, stating that US naval destroyers had joined Israeli defence units in shooting down the missiles, Al Jazeera reported.

Sullivan emphasised the professionalism and joint planning that contributed to the defence effort.

Meanwhile, the statement made no reference to the ongoing violence in Gaza and Lebanon, where thousands of civilians have been killed, raising concerns about the broader conflict’s toll.

In Gaza, as the genocide continues, more than 41,000 people have been killed in less than a year.
