A Bangladeshi court issued an arrest warrant on Thursday for exiled former leader Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India in August after being ousted by a student-led uprising, AFP reported.
“The court has ordered the arrest of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her appearance in court on November 18,” Mohammad Tajul Islam, the chief prosecutor of Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal, announced, as per the international agency report.
The report added that Hasina has been staying near Delhi since her August departure.
Her son and adviser, Sajeeb Wazed, previously told international news agency Reuters that Hasina was prepared to face trial in Bangladesh, as demanded by the students who led the uprising. When asked about her return, Wazed said, “That will be up to her.”
Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, fled the country to India in August after being ousted from power by a student-led revolution.
The uprising, driven by widespread dissatisfaction with her government, resulted in her removal from office. Faced with mounting political pressure and the threat of prosecution, she sought refuge near Delhi, India, where she has remained in exile. The students leading the revolt also demanded she face trial back home, contributing to her decision to leave Bangladesh.
