JK assembly to honour late Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Jagmohan, others

Srinagar: Late Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani will be among former legislators and parliamentarians remembered by the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Tuesday.

The assembly’s speaker will pay tribute to former legislators who have passed away since the last session held in February 2018.

Also included in Tuesday’s remembrance will be Jagmohan, former President Pranab Mukherjee, ex-Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, former governor Jagmohan Malhotra, and recently deceased BJP MLA Devender Singh Rana. The Speaker will make references to the demise of former President of India Pranab Mukherjee, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Speaker of Lok Sabha Somnath Chatterjee, former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Jagmohan Malhotra, former Union Minister Prof Chaman Lal Gupta.

Geelani served as an MLA for the Sopore constituency three times, winning elections in 1972, 1977, and 1987. Following the onset of militancy in 1989, he aligned with separatist movements and refrained from participating in elections until his death in 2021.
