Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday encouraged young, creative talents to tackle challenges in India’s apparel and textile industry, aiming to position the country as a global fashion leader.
Speaking at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) convocation in Srinagar, Sinha congratulated the institute’s staff and graduates and expressed confidence in the potential of India’s youth to infuse cultural and historical uniqueness into fashion.
During his address, Sinha highlighted initiatives aimed at strengthening the apparel industry’s value chain from raw fiber to finished products, while preserving India’s cultural heritage. He noted Jammu and Kashmir’s rich artistic traditions seen in its handicrafts and handloom products, pledging support to empower local artisans and craftsmen.
Sinha praised NIFT’s efforts to support J&K artisans through Craft Cluster Projects and encouraged students to apply their skills inclusively, bringing value to the handicrafts industry and honoring the creativity of artisans. He also paid tribute to renowned fashion designer Rohit Bal, originally from Srinagar, whose legacy he hopes will inspire NIFT graduates toward innovative growth.
Earlier, Sinha attended the Foundation Day celebration at the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) in Awantipora. Congratulating the institution on becoming a prominent STEM hub, he emphasised the university’s role in societal progress through equitable and innovative practices. He spoke of his commitment to modernising education, integrating science, technology, and humanities for a holistic approach. Sinha noted that IUST’s ianitiatives align with NEP 2020’s vision for a multidisciplinary, future-ready educational system and commended its achievements in innovation, startups, and entrepreneurship, highlighted by its 4-star rating from the Ministry of Education.
