Bareilly: Three men lost their lives after their car, misled by Google Maps, drove onto an under-construction bridge and plunged into the Ramganga river in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district, police said on Sunday.
The incident occurred on Saturday when the victims, identified as Vivek, Amit, and one unidentified person, were traveling from Gurugram to Bareilly to attend a wedding. Relying on GPS navigation, the car ended up on an incomplete flyover, leading to the fatal plunge from a height of 50 feet into the shallow river.
Locals discovered the wreckage the following morning and alerted the police. Authorities arrived at the scene, recovered the bodies, and sent them for post-mortem examinations. “The damaged vehicle, believed to be a hired Wagon R, was found submerged in the river near the unfinished bridge,” a police official said.
The victims’ families held local authorities responsible for the tragedy, questioning why proper barricades had not been placed to block access to the incomplete structure. They demanded action against the construction department, calling for an FIR to be lodged for alleged negligence.
Further investigations are underway to identify the third victim and determine the circumstances that led to the incident.
