New Delhi: Leaders from several INDIA bloc parties donned black jackets adorned with stickers reading “Modi Adani Ek Hai” and “Adani Safe Hai,” as they raised slogans within the Parliament premises. The protest was aimed at demanding a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into allegations involving the Adani Group.
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, sported the sticker on his signature white T-shirt and asserted that Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi cannot initiate an investigation into Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani, as it would essentially mean investigating himself.
The protest saw participation from Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with members of other opposition parties such as the RJD and the Left. Both Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi emphasised the need for a parliamentary discussion on Adani’s alleged indictment in a U.S. court over charges of bribery and fraud. They also demanded that PM Modi address the matter in the House.
The demonstration took place near the Makar Dwar entrance of Parliament, instead of the steps leading to it, after Speaker Om Birla and a Lok Sabha Secretariat advisory flagged concerns. Later, the MPs shifted their protest to the Samvidhan Sadan area, where they continued their slogans against Modi and Adani.
Earlier, the Lok Sabha Secretariat issued an advisory cautioning MPs against holding protests near Parliament gates, citing potential safety and security risks. Opposition MPs had previously demonstrated on the Makar Dwar steps earlier in the week.
Notably, the TMC abstained from these protests. Meanwhile, the Congress and several other opposition parties have reiterated their demand for a JPC probe following Adani’s indictment in the U.S. court. The Congress argued that this development reinforces their call for an investigation into alleged scams involving the Adani conglomerate. Rahul Gandhi has also called for Adani’s immediate arrest. The Adani Group, however, has rejected all accusations as “baseless.”
