Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir has made progress in implementing the Forest Rights Act (FRA), 2006, which recognises the rights of Scheduled Tribes and traditional forest dwellers, according to the government of India’s report in Rajya Sabha.
As of now, 6,020 titles have been distributed, including 429 individual and 5,591 community rights. Rajouri district recorded the highest distribution with 2,852 titles, followed by Poonch with 1,902 titles. Some districts, like Samba and Jammu, saw no individual titles but recognised community rights. In the Kashmir region, Anantnag led with 325 titles.
Additionally, extensive plantation activities have been undertaken under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA). Over the past five years, Rs 679.58 crore has been spent on afforestation, treating over 508 square kilometers of forest land, with Rs 177.43 crore spent in 2022-23 alone.
