Uttar Pradesh: A Dalit constable’s wedding procession in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr was allegedly attacked by upper-caste men, who objected to the loud DJ music. The attackers reportedly vandalised the DJ vehicle, pelted stones, forced the groom off his horse, and injured several guests, police said on Sunday.
An FIR has been filed, five suspects have been detained, and an investigation is underway, as reported by Times of India.
The groom, Robin Singh, 31, a PAC constable posted in Ghaziabad, was marrying another constable from Lakhawati on Monday. According to his father, Nandram Singh, the baraat was passing through Titona village in the Jahangirabad area around 8pm when 20-25 men from the Thakur community stopped them.
Nandram stated, “They objected to the DJ music, attacked us with stones, forcibly pulled my son off the horse, and vandalised the DJ vehicle. Some guests were injured in the attack, and my son narrowly escaped serious harm.”
Robin added that some of the attackers had attended his engagement ceremony. “I recognised some of them. They misbehaved with women in the procession, claiming a Dalit baraat shouldn’t pass through their area. They also beat the DJ driver and damaged the equipment. We had to abandon the baraat and later went to the bride’s house by car. The wedding excitement was completely ruined,” he said.
SP (Rural) Rohit Mishra clarified, “The incident stemmed from a dispute over loud DJ music during the baraat. Five suspects have been detained, and others are being identified. Appropriate action will be taken after the investigation.”
The FIR has been registered under various sections of the IPC, including rioting, restricting movement, mischief, and causing hurt, along with charges under the SC/ST Act.
