Iran’s government said Saturday it would stand firm against what it called “unjust” US sanctions, while signalling that Tehran would continue pursuing diplomacy alongside its defence efforts.
The Iranian cabinet stated that the country’s foreign policy will be pursued on the grounds of “dignity, wisdom and expedience,” as Tehran remains under increased pressure from Washington and Israel, according to Al Jazeera.
“The diplomacy of the Islamic Republic of Iran will be carried out with due adherence to the three principles of dignity, wisdom and expediency, with an emphasis on maintaining effective resistance to the conspiracies of the American-Zionist arrogance and the pressures caused by the unreasonable sanctions,” the cabinet said in a statement, as cited by Al Jazeera.
This comes as the United States has intensified its pressure campaign on the Islamic Republic with expanding sanctions targeting Iranian-related business and financial networks and imposing more measures on countries that do business with Tehran after weeks of tension between the two nations.
Iran has continued to call for sanctions relief as part of efforts to resolve the conflict and address the status of the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has said it is prepared to use both diplomacy and defence to protect its interests.
The latest statement comes as diplomatic efforts continue, with regional countries seeking to help revive dialogue between Tehran and Washington.
