Srinagar: The National Conference (NC) has voiced disappointment over the exclusion of holidays marking the 1931 martyrs and party founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah from the list of public holidays issued by the lieutenant governor’s administration in Jammu and Kashmir.
“The decision reflects the BJP’s disregard for Kashmir’s history and democratic struggle,” NC chief spokesman Tanvir Sadiq wrote on X late Sunday.
Earlier this month, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah hinted that holidays removed post-Article 370 abrogation might be reinstated.
“While we had hoped for the inclusion of days honouring Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and the July 13 martyrs, their absence does not diminish their importance. These holidays will be restored one day,” Sadiq added.
July 13, observed as a public holiday in JK, commemorated the 23 persons killed by Dogra Maharaja’s forces in 1931. December 5 marked Sheikh Abdullah’s birth anniversary. Both were removed from the holiday list after Article 370’s abrogation in 2019.
The LG administration’s public holiday list for 2025 continues to omit these days.
