India has confirmed seven cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that recently gained attention after an outbreak in China.

Authorities have clarified that HMPV is not a new virus and has been in global circulation for years, stating that there is no cause for panic.

Two cases were recently reported in Nagpur, Maharashtra, with samples sent to AIIMS for further testing. Both patients have recovered and been discharged.

Earlier, Karnataka recorded two cases in Bengaluru, including an eight-month-old baby who is still recovering and a three-month-old who has been discharged.

In Ahmedabad, a two-month-old infant was confirmed positive for HMPV after being hospitalised with cold and breathing difficulties. The child has recovered and is ready for discharge. Tamil Nadu has also reported two cases, one each in Chennai and Salem.

Authorities have assured that there is no unusual surge in respiratory illnesses in the country. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) stated that India is well-equipped to handle any potential increase in cases. HMPV, which spreads through air and surfaces, affects people of all age groups, particularly during winter.

Symptoms include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath, with severe cases potentially leading to bronchitis or pneumonia.

Globally, the virus has raised concerns after an outbreak in China, where respiratory infections typically peak during the winter season. Health experts continue to stress the importance of basic precautions such as wearing masks, washing hands, and consulting doctors for severe symptoms. The government is closely monitoring the situation and urging the public to remain cautious but not alarmed.
