Dead mice found in oil tin at Hazratbal street vendor stall; owner booked

Srinagar: Chaos erupted in the Hazratbal area of Srinagar on Friday after a customer discovered two dead mice inside an open oil tin used by a street vendor to fry fritters and other local sweets, commonly known in Kashmir as ‘Manjgool Wol.’

The shocking discovery raised serious concerns over food hygiene and public health, especially as a large number of devotees had gathered at the Hazratbal shrine for the congregational prayers.

Eyewitnesses told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that a customer, upon noticing the contamination, immediately objected and alerted others. The incident quickly drew a crowd of shocked onlookers, with many expressing anger over the vendor’s negligence.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after and seized the oil tin along with the dead mice. People are expecting action against the vendor.

Meanwhile, taking on micro-blogging platform X, The Srinagar police wrote, “FIR No 10/2025 registered in Police Station Nigeen under section 271 BNS for an unlawful & negligent act of spreading infection by a street food vendor in Hazratbal area.”
