New Delhi: By 1pm on Wednesday, voter turnout in Delhi’s ongoing election for 70 assembly constituencies stood at 33.31 percent.
Polling began at 7am and will run until 6pm. The Election Commission (EC) reported that 33.31 percent of eligible voters had cast their ballots by early afternoon.
Delhi has about 1.56 crore eligible voters. The highest turnout was in Northeast Delhi with 39.51 percent, while Central Delhi had the lowest at 29.74 percent.
Among the constituencies, Mustafabad saw the highest turnout at 43 percent, and Karol Bagh had the lowest at 25.01 percent.
Other districts’ turnouts included East Delhi at 33.66 percent, New Delhi at 29.89 percent, North Delhi at 32.44 percent, Northwest Delhi at 33.17 percent, Shahdara at 35.81 percent, South Delhi at 32.67 percent, Southeast Delhi at 32.37 percent, Southwest Delhi at 35.44 percent, and West Delhi at 30.87 percent.
Polling is taking place at 13,766 stations across the 70 constituencies, where 699 candidates are vying for seats.
In comparison, the 2020 Delhi election saw a turnout of 62.59 percent, while the 2024 Lok Sabha elections had a turnout of 56 percent.
Among the early voters were President Droupadi Murmu, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, GoI ministers S Jaishankar and Hardeep Singh Puri, Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Delhi CM Atishi, and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal.
Vice-President Dhankhar emphasised that voting is the “oxygen for democracy” and the most important right people have. He added that India’s democracy stands as a model for the world and that voting is the foundation of all rights. He also praised the Election Commission for its efforts in ensuring a smooth election process.
