Srinagar: A breakaway faction of Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir (JeI) has sought registration with the Election Commission of India (ECI) under the name ‘Justice and Development Front’ (JDF) ahead of local body elections.

The announcement was made at a convention in Kulgam, where Shamim Ahmad Thoker, the election in-charge, said the front aims to address public issues and urged the government to lift the ban on JeI, The Wire reported.

The government of India banned JeI under UAPA in 2019 after the Pulwama attack, extending it for another five years last year. An eight-member panel of former and current JeI members held talks with the government to revoke the ban, but JeI chief Fayaz Ahmad Wani distanced the organisation from these efforts, the rpeort said.

If ECI approves the registration, the upcoming local body elections will be the first major test for JDF. The State Election Commission has finalised electoral rolls, but poll dates are yet to be announced.
