In a recent high-stakes match between India and Pakistan, Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli turned many heads not only for his performance but also for a ‘subtle yet powerful gesture’.

In many posts that have been shared widely on social media, Kohli was spotted wearing a cap emblazoned with the number ‘804’, a move interpreted by many as a silent protest against the Pakistan Army and government concerning the detention of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The number ‘804’ holds particular significance in Pakistan’s current political climate. It refers to the prisoner identification assigned to Imran Khan following his arrest, as reported by Pakistan media.

In August 2023, Khan was detained on charges of corruption related to the alleged sale of state gifts, a case he and his supporters vehemently deny, labelling it as politically motivated. In January 2025, a Pakistani court sentenced Khan to 14 years in prison, which further intensified political tensions in the country.

The ‘804’ symbol has since become a rallying cry amongst Khan’s supporters, symbolising solidarity and protest against his incarceration.

Merchandise bearing the number has proliferated, and public figures have used it to express their dissent. Notably, Pakistani cricketer Aamir Jamal was previously seen wearing a hat with ‘804’, showcasing his support for Khan.

Kohli showed an exemplary sportsmanship during the match. When Pakistani pacer Naseem Shah struggled with his shoelaces due to his batting gear, Kohli assisted by tying them for him. This act of camaraderie transcended on-field rivalries and was widely praised by cricket lovers worldwide.

In the match, chasing a target of 242 runs set by Pakistan, India secured victory with six wickets in hand and 45 balls to spare.
