Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government has allocated Rs 10 crore for the construction of six new helipads across the Union Territory. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during his budget speech in the assembly.

The helipads will improve air connectivity, especially in remote and hilly regions where road access remains a challenge. This initiative is expected to enhance emergency services, tourism, and disaster response in JK. The government aims to strengthen infrastructure and facilitate better transportation options for residents and visitors alike.

With JK’s growing focus on tourism, these helipads could play a crucial role in promoting destinations that are currently difficult to access. Additionally, they will support medical emergencies by ensuring faster transportation of patients from far-flung areas.

The budget also outlined investments in healthcare, including Rs 86 crore for a maternity and child care hospital in Anantnag and Rs 110 crore for CT scan facilities in all district hospitals. The government is also focusing on journalist welfare, with plans to establish dedicated press clubs in Jammu and Kashmir. JK’s economy has expanded significantly, with non-tax revenue reaching Rs 5,824 crore and tax revenue standing at Rs 11,650 crore as of January 2025. However, rising public debt remains a concern due to borrowing for power purchase liabilities, which have pushed the debt-to-GSDP ratio to 52% in 2023-24.
