Storm in JK assembly as Waheed Para demands revocation of AAC, JKIM ban

Jammu: In the ongoing legislative assembly session, PDP lawmaker Waheed Para, halted proceedings to demand urgent attention on the recent ban imposed on the Awami Action Committee (AAC) led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The government of India’s decision to ban AAC and JKIM for five years has stirred controversy and condemnation from various political quarters. Home Minister Amit Shah defended the ban, citing accusations of anti-India activities and support for militancy against both organisations.

Para, addressing the Assembly, criticised the ban as a measure that stifles legitimate political dissent and democratic expression in the region. He stressed upon the need for dialogue and peaceful resolution of issues affecting Jammu and Kashmir, urging the House to intervene and reconsider the ban.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, reacting to the ban on social media, reiterated the AAC’s commitment to non-violence and democratic principles, denouncing the decision as an attempt to suppress legitimate political voices in Kashmir.

The issue has sparked heated debates within the Assembly, with Para leading calls for the immediate revocation of the ban, arguing that such measures undermine the democratic fabric of Jammu and Kashmir.

The proceedings in the Assembly remain tense as lawmakers from across the political spectrum weigh in on the contentious issue, highlighting deep divisions over the handling of Kashmiri political organisations by the government of India.
