Srinagar: A day after the deadly militant attack in Pahalgam that left 26 people, mostly tourists, dead, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti condemned the killings, calling them a direct attack on Kashmiriyat—the spirit of Kashmiri hospitality and communal harmony.
Speaking to the media during a protest held at Srinagar’s Ghanta Ghar, Mehbooba expressed deep sorrow and extended an apology to the nation on behalf of the people of Kashmir.
“This barbaric attack on innocent tourists is not just a loss of lives, it’s a strike against everything Kashmir stands for,” she said. “We condemn this cowardly act in the strongest possible terms.”
She urged Home Minister of India Amit Shah, who is currently in Kashmir, to ensure the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice. “The Home Minister is here, and he must act without delay to hold those behind this heinous act accountable,” she said.
Mehbooba also said the attack has damaged Kashmir’s image as a place of peace and hospitality. “Tourists come to Kashmir to find solace in its beauty. This attack has deeply shaken that trust. As Kashmiris, we are ashamed and heartbroken.”
Concluding her remarks, she added, “I express heartfelt regret to the people of our country. We share in your grief and are truly sorry for this tragedy.”
