MP duo branded as Kashmiris, suspected of suspicious activity in Baruipur; police say claim baseless

West Bengal: Baruipur Police on Thursday refuted claims made in a social media post that alleged suspicious activity involving two persons ‘ostensibly from Kashmir’ residing in the area.

The viral post, made on platform ‘X’ earlier in the day, drew attention to what it called a “high-performance wireless network system” installed on the rooftop of a flat in Baruipur, raising suspicion over the presence of the two men.

In an official statement, Baruipur Police clarified that the information was immediately verified on the ground and found to be entirely misleading. “The two persons, one Hindu and the other Muslim, are both engineers from Madhya Pradesh, not Kashmir,” the police said. “They rented a flat in Baruipur around three weeks ago and are exploring business opportunities in pisciculture in West Bengal through a local friend.”

Police further confirmed that there is nothing unusual about the internet setup at their residence. “There is a simple JioFiber connection installed in their flat, similar to what many citizens use. There is nothing suspicious about it,” the statement read.

Terming the social media post as “inaccurate and potentially inciteful,” the police criticised the manner in which the information was shared. “It is unfortunate that some people choose to disseminate such information through social media instead of reporting it to the appropriate authorities,” the statement said.

The police emphasised that while vigilance from citizens is welcome, sharing unverified content on public platforms can do more harm than good.

“We expect citizens to exercise restraint and responsibility while using public platforms without jumping to any conclusions. All citizens are encouraged to share any information of suspicious activity, but not through social media posts,” the statement added.

Baruipur police also issued a reminder that making public insinuations against persons without verification is legally punishable.
