Srinagar: In the special session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly held today in Jammu after the Pahalgam attack, MLAs Shabir Kullay and Sheikh Khurshid condemned the incident and called for unity, accountability, and restoration of statehood.

MLA Shopian Shabir Kullay said the Assembly stands united in condemning the Pahalgam attack, calling it both a terrorist and a communal act.

He said that whenever normalcy returned to Kashmir, such acts were committed by those with vested interests. However, he pointed out that for the first time, people across Jammu and Kashmir had collectively rejected violence.

Kullay said the situation is a test for everyone. He raised questions about who should be blamed, who should be held accountable, and who should answer the concerns of the people.

He praised the actions of those who saved the remaining tourists and requested a full enquiry into how and why the attack happened.

He stressed that local police and security agencies should be strengthened and warned against playing a blame game. He urged the government to take full responsibility for maintaining law and order.

Kullay requested that egos be set aside and that the Government of India should be asked to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, believing it would help prevent future incidents.

He expressed satisfaction with the solidarity shown by other states and emphasised the need to unite people rather than divide them.

Speaking in the session, MLA Langate Sheikh Khurshid proposed that a memorial be built for those killed in the Pahalgam attack.

He highlighted an incident in his constituency where a man was killed at night and called for an inquiry and compensation for the affected family.

Khurshid urged the Union Government to address the situation with care and called for security measures for students from Jammu and Kashmir studying in other states.

He also demanded action against those spreading communal hatred and supported the call for the restoration of statehood to empower local governance and improve security management.
