‘Give severest punishment to guilty’: GCC JK condemns ‘rape and murder’ of tribal woman in Srinagar

Srinagar: The Group of Concerned Citizens (GCC) J&K has condemned the “rape and murder” of a tribal woman in Nishat area of Srinagar, describing it “a grievous wound on the conscience of our society”.

The Group has appreciated the swift action by Police in apprehending the accused and urged ” fast-track investigation and trial to secure justice to the victim and the family while handing down severest punishment to the perpetrators, unleashing a deterrence effect that it must”.

In a statement issued here today, the GCC said,  “it is our collective responsibility to address the causes at the root of rising crime against women” and made a spirited plea that “communities come together to help further a culture where women are respected, protected and empowered. ”

Pertinently, Srinagar police on Monday said that prompt action led to the arrest of all four accused involved in ‘sexual assualt case’.

The police said that the victim had sustained grievous injuries and was shifted to the hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

Following the incident, FIR 35/2025 under relevant sections of law was registered at Police Station Nishat, and investigation was immediately initiated, they said.

During the course of investigation, the accused were identifed. Further investigation in the case is underway, they said.
