The world watched in anticipation today as white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signaling that the College of Cardinals has elected a new pope, Vatican News reported.

The historic decision came on the second day of the secretive papal conclave.

The name of the newly chosen pontiff — the spiritual leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics — will be formally announced from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica by Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, the senior cardinal deacon. The pope-elect is expected to appear shortly afterward to deliver his first public blessing.

A total of 133 cardinals from around the world participated in the conclave, casting their ballots in strict secrecy. According to tradition, the cardinals were completely cut off from external contact throughout the voting process. A two-thirds majority was required to elect the new pope.

The announcement has drawn thousands of faithful and onlookers to St Peter’s Square, where bells rang out in celebration of the momentous occasion.

The world now awaits to hear the name of the man who will take on one of the most influential roles in global religious and moral leadership.
