‘NB.1.8.1 and LF.7’: India sees surge in COVID cases with new variants; tally crosses 1,000

New Delhi: As of May 26, 2025, India has reported 1,009 active COVID-19 cases, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The states with the highest number of active cases are Kerala (430), Maharashtra (209), and Delhi (104).

In Kerala, 335 new infections were reported, bringing the state’s active caseload to 430. Maharashtra recorded 43 new cases, increasing its active cases to 209. Delhi reported 99 new cases in the past week, with a total of 104 active cases.

Other states with notable active cases include Gujarat (83), Karnataka (47), Uttar Pradesh (15), and West Bengal (12).

Health authorities have noted that most cases are mild, with symptoms such as low-grade fever and fatigue, and are advising the public to remain cautious but not panic.

Since May 19, seven COVID-19-related deaths have been reported across India: four in Maharashtra, two in Kerala, and one in Karnataka.

Health experts recommend continued adherence to preventive measures, including mask-wearing, hand hygiene, and avoiding crowded places, to mitigate the spread of the virus.
