2 dead, 5 rescued after bridge collapses in Gujarat, vehicles plunge into river

The collapsed bridge on Vadodara

Vadodara: At least two people lost their lives and five others were rescued after several vehicles plunged into the Mahisagar River following the collapse of an old bridge in Gujarat’s Vadodara district early Wednesday morning.

The bridge, situated in Mujpur village of Padra taluka, connected Mujpur to Gambhira in Anand district, serving as a crucial link between Central Gujarat and the Saurashtra region.

Footage from the incident shows a tanker hanging dangerously from the broken structure, while a woman can be heard screaming for help, pleading for her son, who appears to be trapped inside an overturned Eeco van submerged in the river.

Vadodara District Collector Anil Dhameliya told The Indian Express, “We’ve rescued five individuals with minor injuries, and two fatalities have been confirmed. Rescue operations are still underway. So far, we know that two trucks, an Eeco van, a pickup van, and an auto-rickshaw fell into the river when a section of the bridge suddenly collapsed.”
