New Delhi: Public services like banking, coal mining, highway and construction work, insurance, and postal services may face disruptions today as more than 25 crore workers are expected to participate in a India-wide Bharat Bandh.
The strike has been called to oppose the government’s new labour laws and privatisation policies, while also demanding a minimum wage of Rs26,000 and the revival of the old pension scheme.
Organised by a coalition of 10 central trade unions, the strike aims to make a strong impact across the country.
According to a PTI report, Amarjeet Kaur of the All India Trade Union Congress confirmed that over 25 crore workers—including farmers and rural labourers—are expected to join the protest.
In West Bengal, Left-affiliated union members were seen blocking railway tracks at Jadavpur station and marching through the city. A heavy police presence has been deployed near the Jadavpur 8B bus stand, and some private bus drivers wore helmets as a safety measure while keeping their services operational.
While banks have not officially declared a holiday, services may be affected due to reduced staffing. Some banking unions, like the Bengal Provincial Bank Employees Association (linked to the All India Bank Employees Association), have joined the strike.
Delays in services are likely, but most bank branches are expected to remain open. It is advisable to check with local branches for updates.
