At least 33 civilians, including children, have been killed in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since early Wednesday amid intensified military operations in Gaza City, medical sources told Anadolu. The death toll has crossed 62,000.
In northern Gaza, three people were killed and 10 others wounded when Israeli forces struck a house in Jabalia al-Nazla.
In Gaza City’s Shati refugee camp, five members of one family died after a tent sheltering displaced Palestinians was hit, while another strike near the Islamic University killed four people, including children.
In the southern Sabra neighbourhood, shelling killed two children, while in Zeitoun, four members of a family were killed when a building housing displaced families was targeted, sparking a fire, according to medical staff. Witnesses reported hearing explosions across several parts of the city.
Israeli forces have been intensifying air and artillery strikes on Zeitoun and Sabra for 10 consecutive days as part of an operation launched on August 11 that includes demolitions, gunfire, booby-trapped devices, and forced displacement. Public broadcaster KAN reported Wednesday that Defence Minister Israel Katz has approved a plan to occupy Gaza City.
In central Gaza, eight Palestinians were killed near an aid distribution point in Nuseirat refugee camp after Israeli troops opened fire, Al-Awda hospital said. Another five, including a child, were killed when airstrikes hit houses in the camp.
Further south, in Khan Younis, a woman and her two children—including a toddler—were killed when their home in a refugee camp was struck. Separately, 12 people were injured when Israeli aircraft targeted a tent in Al-Mawasi.
Since the start of the war in October 2023, more than 62,000 Palestinians have been killed, and the enclave now faces famine, according to local health authorities.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its military campaign.
