Srinagar: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday issued separate notifications to begin the nomination process for the Budgam and Nagrota assembly constituencies.
According to the ECI, candidates can submit their nomination papers for 27-Budgam and 77-Nagrota until October 20. Scrutiny of the papers will be conducted on October 22, while the last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 24.
Polling for both seats will be held on November 11, and counting of votes is scheduled for November 14.
The Budgam seat became vacant on October 21, 2024, after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah decided to retain the Ganderbal constituency, which he also won in the 2024 Assembly elections. The Nagrota seat fell vacant following the death of BJP MLA Devinder Singh Rana on October 31, 2024.
ECI today issued notifications for bye-elections to five Assembly constituencies across the country. Polling for all seats will be held on November 11, while the counting of votes is scheduled for November 14.
According to the notification, the bye-election for the 71-Nuapada Assembly Constituency in Odisha will see nomination filing from October 20, scrutiny on October 22, and withdrawal of nominations by October 24. The seat fell vacant following the death of BJD MLA Rajendra Dholakia on September 8, who passed away while undergoing treatment in Chennai.
Similarly, the ECI announced the schedule for the bye-election to the 21-Tarn Taran Assembly Constituency in Punjab. Nominations will open on October 21, with scrutiny on October 22 and withdrawal by October 24. Voting will take place on November 11 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. The bypoll was necessitated by the demise of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal.
In Rajasthan, the bye-election to the 193–Anta Assembly Constituency will be held following the disqualification of MLA Kanwar Lal Meena on May 23 after his conviction in a 20-year-old criminal case. As per the ECI, nominations will close on October 21, scrutiny will be held on October 23, and withdrawals will be allowed until October 27.
The Commission has also announced bye-elections for the 77-Nagrota and 27-Budgam Assembly Constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir. Nominations for both will be accepted until October 20, followed by scrutiny on October 22 and withdrawal on October 24. Polling for both segments is scheduled for November 11.
