India seeks probe into killing of Bangladeshi student leader

Hindu groups protest in Delhi.

New Delhi: India has summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah and sought a thorough investigation into the killing of Bangladeshi student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, amid worsening diplomatic tensions between the two neighbours.

The move came hours after India’s envoy in Dhaka was summoned by Bangladesh to protest incidents outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi. Demonstrations have erupted following the recent lynching of a Hindu worker in Bangladesh.

Officials said Hamidullah was told that Dhaka must conduct a proper probe into Hadi’s killing, particularly as unverified claims of Indian involvement have fueled anti-India sentiment.

Protests have also taken place outside Indian missions in Bangladesh, including an attempt last week to storm India’s assistant high commission in Chittagong, prompting India to suspend visa services there.

India has rejected what it called a false narrative being pushed by extremist elements and expressed concern over Bangladesh’s failure to share credible evidence related to the unrest.
