PDP leader cites humanitarian grounds, says denial of bail amid father’s critical illness raises questions on justice system

Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party leader Waheed Para has appealed to the government and the courts to consider the bail application of MP Er Rashid on humanitarian grounds, stating that his father is battling for life on ventilator support.

Para said no parent should have to endure the pain of seeing their children suffer due to political circumstances, adding that denying Rashid the opportunity to be with his ailing father was “worse than death.”

“Compassion must be at the root of justice. When a son is unable to be beside his dying father, it reflects a deeper crisis of humanity,” Para said.

Rashid, who won a parliamentary election while in custody, continues to remain lodged in Tihar Jail. Para said the continued detention of an elected representative raises serious questions about due process and the functioning of the criminal justice system.

Highlighting the broader implications, Para said such instances deepen public anguish in Kashmir. “We may have political and ideological differences, but they should not become so cruel that a father and child are denied a final meeting,” he said, adding that personal suffering often translates into collective resentment in the region.

Calling for empathy, Para urged authorities to act with “rehm” (compassion) and allow Rashid temporary relief to meet his father.
