Kashmiri Pandits protest NFSA move, scuffle with police in Jammu

Kashmiri Pandits protest in Jammu against JK administration.

Jammu: In Jammu, members of the Kashmiri Pandit community staged protests against a decision by JK administration to merge their relief rations into the National Food Security Act system. Demonstrators argued that the move undermines their recognition as displaced victims and weakens their distinct status.

Large numbers of protesters gathered near the Relief Commissioner’s office, raising slogans and demanding the rollback of the decision. The demonstration included representatives from several community organisations and residents of migrant camps across the region.

When protesters attempted to march toward the office, police intervened, resulting in minor clashes and pushing between the two sides. The crowd was eventually dispersed, though protesters later regrouped and continued their agitation with a sit-in.

Officials say the integration process, already underway, aims to include tens of thousands of migrant families in broader welfare schemes, but opposition from the community remains strong.
