How a Ghaziabad teen’s killing spiraled into arrests, demolitions and communal tensions

Police officers stand near the site of the encounter in Ghaziabad on Sunday.

Ghaziabad: Five days after 17-year-old Surya Pratap Chauhan died following a stabbing in Ghaziabad’s Khoda locality, the case has expanded beyond a murder investigation into a broader story involving a police encounter, arrests, anti-encroachment drives, madrasa closures and growing communal tensions.

Surya was allegedly stabbed on May 28 by Asad, a 19-year-old resident of the same locality. He died the following day during treatment. On May 31, Asad was killed in a police encounter while officers were attempting to arrest him, police said in a statement.

Since then, the incident has drawn political attention, protests by Hindu organisations and administrative action across the area, while residents continue to offer differing accounts of what led to the violence.

According to police, Surya and Asad were known to each other and became involved in an argument on the afternoon of May 28.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Dhaval Jaiswal told multiple media organisations that the dispute arose after an argument over a motorcycle. Police have maintained that the attack was not pre-planned.

Several residents interviewed by different news outlets said the two young men had been seen together previously and were known within the neighbourhood.

However, accounts differ regarding the nature of their relationship. While some family members of Surya described them as acquaintances, others denied that the two were friends.

Police allege that Surya was attacked by Asad along with several other individuals. Investigators have stated that multiple accused were present during the incident.

Surya was taken to the hospital with stab injuries and died the following day.

Following the death, police registered a murder case and launched a search operation for Asad, who was identified as the principal accused.

Authorities announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his arrest.

Police subsequently arrested three other accused and continued searches for additional suspects allegedly connected to the attack.

According to investigators, CCTV footage and witness statements form part of the ongoing inquiry.

The police said Asad was killed during an operation conducted jointly by Khoda and Indirapuram police teams in the early hours of May 31.

According to the official version, officers received information that Asad intended to collect money from associates before fleeing the area. Police established checkpoints and began vehicle inspections.

Officials stated that Asad arrived on a motorcycle with another individual and opened fire when officers attempted to stop him.

Police returned fire, injuring Asad. He was transported to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

A police constable was also injured during the exchange, according to authorities.

Police reported recovering a country-made pistol and a motorcycle from the scene. The second individual allegedly escaped and remains under investigation.

Questions regarding the encounter have also been raised in subsequent reporting. The investigation into the encounter follows procedures applicable to police firing incidents in Uttar Pradesh.

Police have arrested Nawab, Asad’s father, along with Farhan and Atif in connection with the case.

Investigators allege that some of the accused participated in the confrontation that led to Surya’s death.

According to police statements cited by several media organisations, one of the arrested accused told investigators that the dispute began earlier in the day and later escalated into a violent confrontation.

These claims form part of the police investigation and remain subject to judicial scrutiny. At least one accused is still absconding, police said.

Outside Surya’s home, groups associated with Hindu organisations have organised gatherings, raised slogans and demanded action against those accused in the case.

Several residents interviewed by media organisations expressed support for the strict punishment of those responsible.

At the same time, Muslim residents in the area have condemned the killing while expressing concern about the atmosphere that has developed since the incident.

Some Muslim-owned businesses remained closed in the days following the stabbing. Residents reported increased police deployment across the locality and restrictions on public gatherings.

Interviews conducted by various news organisations indicate that residents disagree not only about the motive behind the attack but also about how the incident should be understood.

Alongside the criminal investigation, authorities launched enforcement actions across Khoda.

The Ghaziabad administration initiated an anti-crime and anti-encroachment operation that included surveillance measures, inspections and demolition of structures identified by officials as unauthorised.

Authorities also sealed three madrasas, stating that they lacked the required registration with the Uttar Pradesh Madrasa Board. District officials stated that the action formed part of a broader review of institutions and structures in the locality.

Administrators have said there is no established connection between the madrasas and the murder investigation. Representatives of the affected institutions disputed the action and argued that they possessed the necessary documentation.

Several aspects of the case remain under investigation. Police maintain that the confrontation originated from a personal dispute between persons who knew each other.

Residents and family members continue to offer differing accounts regarding the relationship between Surya and Asad, the events preceding the stabbing and the number of individuals involved.

Meanwhile, the incident continues to shape public discussion in Khoda, where the murder investigation, police encounter and subsequent administrative actions have become closely intertwined.

As of now, police say further investigation is ongoing and additional findings will emerge through the charge sheet and judicial process.
