New Delhi: A Delhi University assistant professor was found murdered inside her apartment in East Delhi’s Vasundhara Enclave, police said on Friday.

The deceased, Devosmita Paul, was an assistant professor at Shivaji College and lived alone at Satyam Apartments. Her husband is currently based in Bengaluru.

According to police, a call was received at New Ashok Nagar police station around 2.35 pm from her sister, 49-year-old Devarati Paul, informing them that Devosmita had been found dead inside her flat.

Police said the apartment had been locked from the outside since the morning and repeated attempts to contact Devosmita had failed. Suspecting something was wrong, Devarati broke open the lock and entered the flat, where she discovered her sister’s body.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Devosmita was attacked with a heavy object. Police found a deep head injury, while the veins on her wrist had also been severed.

The body has been sent to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Investigators said there were no signs of robbery, as cash and jewellery kept inside the house were untouched.

A case of murder has been registered, and multiple teams have been formed to probe the crime. Police said they have gathered several leads and expect to arrest the accused soon.
