In burqa, Sakina Itoo attempts to visit Mazar-e-Shuhada; says security blocked entry

Wearing burqa, Sakina Itoo says she was denied access to July 13 martyrs' graveyard

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Minister and National Conference leader Sakina Itoo on Monday said she was stopped from visiting the Mazar-e-Shuhada in Srinagar to pay tributes to the July 13, 1931 martyrs due to heavy armed forces deployment and barbed-wire barricades around the graveyard.

In a post on X, Itoo said she had reached the martyrs’ graveyard at around 4:30 am along with Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Women’s Wing Provincial President Sabiya Qadri, but was not allowed to enter.

A video shared by the minister showed her, dressed in a black burqa, attempting to reach the graveyard before being stopped by security personnel.

“I tried to visit the Mazar-e-Shuhada at 4:30 am today to pay my humble tributes to our martyrs of July 13. However, due to the heavy deployment of security forces and extensive barbed-wire barricading around the graves, I was prevented from entering,” Itoo wrote on X.

She added that while access to the graveyard had been blocked, such physical barriers could not stop people from remembering and honouring the sacrifices of the July 13 martyrs.
