Kulgam: Kulgam Police have arrested a man from Uttar Pradesh in connection with the fatal hit-and-run case involving an 11-year-old girl in the Vessu area of Qazigund earlier this month, while also tracing and seizing the vehicle allegedly involved in the accident.
The case relates to a road accident that occurred on July 10 near KP Colony, Vessu, where an unidentified vehicle allegedly hit an 11-year-old girl and fled the scene. The child was shifted to the Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Following the incident, Police Station Qazigund registered FIR 176/2026 under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation to identify the vehicle and its driver.
Investigators examined CCTV footage, analysed technical evidence and followed multiple leads before identifying the suspect and tracing the vehicle allegedly used in the accident.
Acting on the leads, a police team travelled to Uttar Pradesh, where it arrested the accused, identified as Arun Gupta, son of Lalit Ram Gupta, a resident of Behrinbagh in Barabanki district, with the assistance of the local police.
Police said the vehicle allegedly involved in the accident was also traced and seized as part of the investigation. Further investigation into the case is underway.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kulgam said the arrest demonstrates that those accused of committing offences cannot evade the law by leaving the Union Territory, adding that the breakthrough was achieved through technical investigation and coordinated efforts by the investigating team.
The officer also urged motorists to drive responsibly, strictly follow traffic regulations and never flee the scene of an accident, saying timely assistance to victims can often prove lifesaving. [KNT]
