Jammu: Heavy rainfall disrupted traffic movement at several locations along the Srinagar-Jammu highway after mudslides and shooting stones were reported between Jakhiani and Chenani on Sunday.
Officials said the incessant rain triggered multiple mudslides and falling stones, affecting vehicular movement and prompting immediate clearance operations by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Men and machinery were pressed into service to remove the accumulated debris and restore normal traffic flow on the affected stretches. Restoration work was continuing at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the road near Dewal, which had been restored following an earlier spell of bad weather, sustained fresh damage due to the continuing rainfall. However, officials said two-way traffic on the highway has remained unaffected, with vehicles being allowed to pass while repair work is carried out on the damaged stretch.
Authorities have advised commuters to exercise caution while travelling on the highway, particularly through vulnerable stretches prone to landslides and shooting stones, and to follow traffic advisories issued by the administration.
The Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only all-weather surface link connecting Kashmir with the rest of India, remains under close monitoring as intermittent rainfall continues across several parts of the region. [KNT]
