New Delhi: Activist Sonam Wangchuk has said he will end his indefinite hunger strike on Monday, July 20, only if three conditions mentioned in a handwritten note from Safdarjung Hospital are fulfilled.
Wangchuk, who has been on a fast for 23 days, was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital on July 18. In the note shared on X, he alleged that he was being kept under “illegal detention” at the hospital.
Explaining his decision, Wangchuk said he would call off the fast if the government accepted responsibility for failures in the education system, including repeated examination paper leaks.
He further said he would also end the protest if he and the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leadership were allowed to reach Parliament and received assurances from Members of Parliament and leaders of different political parties that the issue would be raised in the House.
As a third condition, Wangchuk said that if his health or any other circumstance prevented him from continuing the fast, he would end it if MPs and political leaders visited him at the hospital and gave the same assurance of taking up the matter in Parliament.
Wangchuk has maintained that his protest is aimed at highlighting alleged failures in India’s education system, particularly recurring examination paper leaks. He has demanded that the government accept accountability and commit to meaningful reforms.
His deteriorating health has drawn widespread concern from supporters. Hospital authorities have said he is receiving continuous medical care under close supervision.
In his latest message, Wangchuk reiterated that he would end his hunger strike only after receiving concrete assurances, saying verbal promises alone would not be enough.
