New Delhi: Two women journalists on Thursday alleged that they were detained and assaulted by Delhi Police personnel in south Delhi while covering a news story. A video of the alleged incident has also gone viral on social media.
In the video, one of the journalists is seen questioning a police officer seated on a chair. She also appears to narrate her ordeal from inside the police station while speaking into a microphone bearing her news organisation’s logo.
The journalists alleged that police personnel dragged them to police station before assaulting them. They further claimed that the alleged assault intensified after the police learnt that one of them was Muslim.
The journalists said they were on their way to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a medical examination and to obtain their medico-legal certificates (MLCs).
A video released by the journalists’ news organisation also details their allegations against Delhi Police personnel. In the footage, a police official can be seen inside the station.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alleged that the incident occurred after the journalists questioned Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who belongs to the BJP, about the matter.
AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj criticised the Delhi government over the alleged incident. In a post on X, he said, “Two women reporters have been very brutally beaten by Delhi Police for asking questions from CM Rekha Gupta. Shame on woman CM Rekha Gupta.”
There was no immediate response from the Delhi Police to the allegations.
