Saitual has become the first district in Mizoram to achieve “Surakshit” status under the National AIDS Control Organisation’s Mobilisation AIDS Suraksha campaign after achieving all three targets of the globally recognised AIDS – 95 – HIV Mobilisation strategy, officials said on Tuesday.
The August assessment found Saitual met benchmarks requiring 95% of people living with HIV to know their status, 95% of those diagnosed to receive antiretroviral therapy and 95% of people on treatment to achieve viral load suppression. Saitual is the only district in Mizoram to have so far attained the status.
Under the campaign, districts meeting none or one of the targets are classified as “Sangharshee”, while those meeting two are classified as “Saksham”. Districts that meet all three are given “Surakshit” status.
Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Zothanpari Chhakchhuak thanked Saitual Deputy Commissioner Srinivas Sadi, NGOs, churches, and community leaders for their assistance in funding HIV testing and awareness programmes throughout the district. She said more tests and more regular treatment would be required to sustain the achievement.
The campaign has been implemented in Mizoram since February and its progress at district level is being reviewed by the deputy commissioners.
As per Mizoram State AIDS Control Society, 34,930 HIV positive cases have been reported in the state since October 1990. Of these 6,439 people died by July 2026. 29,217 patient are registered for antiretroviral therapy and 26,382 are on treatment.
